In the sharky and cold waters of Oregon, a grassroots tow-in surf contest takes place at a newly found break, Nelscott Reef. Giant waves up to 50 feet challenge the best big-wave surfers in the world, exposing surfing’s struggle to find new territories, the ugly rise of localism-- in search of the aloha spirit.

Directed by Erich Lyttle, “THE FIND” features surfing greats such as;

An Oregon Surf Documentary Premiere:

“The Find: Claiming Nelscott Reef”
Local filmmakers premiere a film-noir surf documentary about the conflicts, challenges
and rewards brought on by the discovery of a giant, Oregon-coast wave.

The film screens 7pm, November 18th at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre,
4122 NE Sandy Boulevard, $5 at the door.

The film stars a newly discovered break known as Nelscott Reef. Reaching faces of fifty feet, this Oregon wave rivals notorious surf spots like Hawaii’s Jaws and Mavericks in Northern California. Nelscott’s powerful conditions come only a few times a year, lying undiscovered until Lincoln City transplant John Forse attempted to surf it nearly ten years ago. Since then, controversy has swirled as the world’s greatest big-wave surfers, (Peter Mel, Ross Clarke-Jones, Garrett McNamara, Keali’i Mamala) have made the trek to Oregon’s cold, sharky waters. The only way to reach Nelscott is by jet-skiing through a dangerous, pounding, 15-foot inside break. Once the surfers reach the reef, personal watercraft are essential to tow surfers into the wave and for safety.

The documentary, written and directed by Portlander Erich Lyttle (Have You Seen Clem, Fire on the Track, The Ultimate Ride) is not your typical surf porn. It’s a universal exposé of the battle with overcrowding and limited access as well as a search for Aloha Spirit — surfing’s mantra of kindness advocated by the sport’s original Hawaiian ambassador to the world, Duke Kahanamoku. Narration is provided by Surfing Hall of Famer Paul Strauch, Jr.,
one of Duke’s original protégés.

The film was produced and filmed by Sarah Henderson, www.sirenapictures.com, co-written and produced by Billy Miller, featuring the surf photography of Richard Hallman. Executive Producers are John Forse, Adam Wagner and
Jim Kusz, with music by Northwest-based indie musicians and an original score by John Askew.
